Mourning Pastries

A number of people have asked whether the reference to mourning pastries earlier was a typo or are they a real thing.

Yes they are real – Mourning Pastries are a traditional Monegasque breakfast pastry. They used to be flavoured and coloured with the blood of enemies slain in battle. The ones that you can buy in the shops now are more normally use pig blood.

There are still specialist bakers in Monaco who will use the blood from loved ones who have died to make special Mourning Pastries for the funeral and wake.
