How many times table

“When I was at school we learnt our tables by rote and that was the right way to do things and we did them up to 12 because there were 12 shillings in a pound and 12 inches in a foot and 12 apostles and 12 days of christmas and as that is what I had to do and I turned out all right then children today should do it too”

Nicky Morgan – Education Secretary – aged 42

The Infinitepirate says rubbish. We now have 100 pennies in a pound and 100 centimetres in a metre and 1000 grams in a kilogram.

Why not cram their heads full of 10 or 100 or 1000 times tables, why not 17 or 23 or 31, why not do it in binary or hex.

You know why, because “When I was at school we learnt our tables by rote… and as that is what I had to do…then children today should do it too”
